I recently ordered a "get started beekeeping" kit which included a straw hat with a wide round brim and netting draped over top of the whole works, but that hat is pretty flimsy and would put a beekeeper at high risk of being stung on the head due to a misshapen, mangled straw hat.
This fencing style veil supports its own weight to stay upright above the top and sides of your head, leaving plenty of buffer room around your head to make it impossible for your head to be stung - I have experienced a bee sting in the middle of the top of my head, and 0/10, I can't recommend that experience, so this veil is reassuring.
Sting stopper is a respected, good quality brand in beekeeping, and they've designed this veil in such a way that it's compatible with any other brand that offers zip-on veils - you will want to zip it onto a beekeeping jacket to be quite sure you don't end up with an angry bee... in your bonnet, so to speak.
